One unique style that is used to create attention grabbing decoration arrangements is the use of large numbers and letters. Balloon Mosaics and inflatable mylar balloons are great attempts at this. However to get seriously large numbers and letters in a spectaculr way, PVC Pipe Numbers or Geometric PVC Numbers are an excellent option.

Balloons are very stable when working indoors, but exposure to heat from the sub can cause unexpected results. This article will outline seven tips to help you make your next outdoor event with balloon decorations a success instead of a nightmare in the middle of the day.

What you need to know:

·         Balloons will expand in the heat

·         Darker balloon colors will absorb heat and pop faster

·         Balloons will oxidize and lose their clarity

Rule #1 Use larger balloon sizes and inflate them less.

Since hot air expands, allowing for extra expansion will help to preserve your balloons when the time gets hot. Opt to purchase larger balloons than the size you need then under-inflate them. When a balloon is under-inflated, it is less stretched and has a thicker lining that is more resistant to heat and expansion

Rule #2 Inflate then Deflate

Always fully inflate balloons to their maximum size and then deflate until you reach the desired size. This will serve to "loosen the balloon" so it experiences less tension when expansion happens in hot conditions.

Rule #3 Oxidation will Happen

The balloons will oxidize. The visual texture of the balloon will change providing a matte finish. Depending on the look you are going for, this can be a good or a bad thing.
If oxidation is not your goal, purchase a product such as Balloon Shine to spray your balloons to preserve their shine. The results are not always perfect but it is the only way to maintain the sheen of indoor decoration while setting up outdoors.

Rule #4 White is Right

From high school science class you would have learned that white reflects light and heat while black absorbs both. For your outdoor events, use white balloons as much as possible. They reflect the sun and fade less.

Rule #5 Wrap your poles

When working with frameworks and poles, ensure that you cover these in white fabric, duct tape or wrap with white modelling balloons. This will help to keep the framework and poles from getting too hot. For the same reason you choose white balloons over black.

Rule #6 Helium and Heat

If you are working with helium-filled balloons, keep in mind that extreme heat speeds up the balloon diffusion process. So, in high temperatures, helium will escape much faster than normal, drastically reducing float time. Using larger balloons and more helium may mitigate these effects.

Rule #7 Double Stuff

Double Stuff the balloons. If not all, then the dark ones and all the ones that are on top of the decorations. These are at the highest risk of popping in the sun.

By applying one or more of the tips above, you will mitigate against the popping of the balloons in your outdoor arrangement.Be aware that the weather can affect balloons and balloon décor and plan accordingly.

A Double stuffed balloon is where one balloon is placed inside another to create a custom or unique color. It allows decorators and balloon artists to go outside of the traditional or manufactured color pallets available from off-the-shelf balloons. Double stuffing requires using two balloons of different colors to get a resultant color that is a unique mix of the two. One balloon is placed inside the other, where the outer balloon is usually the dominant shade. The process, although relatively straight forward can be challenging at first. However, with a bit of practice, it becomes a simple and reliable way to have custom and creative colors for your arrangement.

Choosing the right Balloon Inflator Pump for Double Stuffed Balloons

It is essential to have the balloons needed to double stuff but equally critical to have your inflation device (balloon inflator). There are several types and brands of balloon inflators available for purchase in your local craft stores such as Michael’s or Hobby Lobby and online marketplaces such as Amazon and eBay. Other high-end inflators can be purchased directly from a manufacturer such as Conwin. Balloon inflators can be either manual or electric.

The task of inflating a single balloon can be easily accomplished by a  hand-held inflator and most low-cost electronic inflators available on the market. However, inflating double stuffed balloons can put a strain on low-cost electric inflators. It is advisable to use either a hand-held inflator or a high-powered inflator when blowing up double-stuffed balloons.

How to inflate double stuffed balloons

Here are the items needed for double stuffing balloons:

• Balloon inflator Balloons
• Balloon stick or straw
• DOUBLE STUFFED BALLOONS

There are a few steps to complete a double stuffed balloon:

1. Select the two colors you wish to work with.
2. Decide which will be the inner or outer color.
3. Place balloon stick (cut to approximately 6 to 8 inches) or a firm straw into the inner balloon.
4. With one hand, hold the exposed end of the balloon stick or straw. With the other hand, hold the balloon halfway down and twist in one direction while moving fingers to the base of the balloon and hold it in place. The objective is to remove as much air as possible from the balloon.
5. With your free hand, glide the outer balloon over the inner balloon and release both. Remove balloon stick. Your double stuffed balloon is ready for inflation.
6. With one hand, hold the body of the balloon while positioning both necks over the nozzle of the pump if using an electric inflator. If you are a hand-held inflator, with one hand, place the neck of the balloon over the nozzle and hold the neck in place. Use the other hand to pump into the balloon.
7. When the desired size has been met, pull the neck of the inner balloon outward and tie it off. (This method reduces the strain on your fingers from tying both balloon necks.

Double stuffed helium balloons

This is an excellent option for arriving at customized colors for both air and helium inflation. It would be best if you only considered inflating double stuffed helium balloons that are 16 inches and over. Adding a second balloon makes for a heavier final product and may not float as desired or at all in smaller sizes of 11” or 9”. Helium inflation is not advisable for 5” balloons.

Double Stuffing Balloons for Outdoor Setups

Creating arrangements for outdoor balloon decorations is a risky and unpredictable venture. A scorching and sunny day can destroy your arrangement as the balloon burst one-by-one under the tremendous heat. Double stuffing balloons is one way to mitigate the effects of heat on your balloons. It will not prevent them from popping, but you will get a much longer lifespan from your balloons than having single balloons. Many decorators double stuff just the upper layer of their arrangements or the side in the direct line of the sun.

How to use old balloons

Double stuffing balloons is also an excellent solution for balloons stored for a long time that may have started to degrade. The double stuffing process can be used to increase their strength and save your inventory.

What is a Geometric Balloon Letter / Number

Geometric Balloon Numbers and Letters are elements used in balloon decorations that form a 3D outline of the alphanumeric characters they represent. Balloon Geometric Mosaic Numbers & Letters for Rent

In this article, we will show you the easy steps we used to create this spectacular floating balloon decoration without helium for the ceiling.

What you need

You will need at least three complementary balloon colors. We chose regular 12 inch round balloons.  In yellow , dark and light purple

You will need a few rolls of ribbon, the higher your ceiling, the more you will need.

A pair of scissors is required for cutting the ribbon to the required length.

Finally, you will need a balloon inflator to pump all your balloons.

Secret Ingredient

The secret ingredient in this balloon decor idea is balloon glue dots. You will need to add about two dots for each balloon. A roll of ballon tape contains about 100 balloon dots.

Now let's get started!

Instructions

Use your scissors to cut strips of ribbon to the length you desire. You want the string to hang about 4 feet from the ground. For our 9 foot high ceiling,  we used four and a half feet of ribbon per balloon. To get the correct length,  measure the height of your ceiling and subtract 4 feet and six inches. Four feet is the distance from the floor and six inches for the difference in the height of your balloon and the extra length for tying.

You will need at least three complementary balloon colors, we chose yellow and two shades purple, one dark and one light. Feel free to add other decorative balloons such as confetti or polka dots.

Inflate all your balloons.

You can use a manual or electric pump. Electric pumps are a bit more expensive, but they are faster, and they will not tire you out, especially when inflating a lot of balloons.

While inflating your balloons, it is more convenient to tie them to the ribbons at the same time. This reduces the additional work of going through all the balloons again to pair them to the strings.

Using a balloon tying tool makes tying a balloon and adding the ribbon super fast and very easy. A balloon tying device also prevents soreness of your fingers after tying a hundred balloons.

Voila, you now have a tied and ribboned ballon, ready for floating.

Repeat this procedure for all your balloons until you are complete.

How many balloons do you need for the no helium, floating balloons ceiling arrangement?

You will need just a little over one balloon per square foot. For our space of 8 ft x 10 ft (80 square feet), we used 88 balloons. We distributed the colors equally between the dark and light purples and the vibrant yellow.

There you have it, all balloons are inflated, creating a sea of beautiful vibrant colors.

We then transported the balloons to the area we planned to use for the setup. You can inflate your balloons up to 48 hours before the actual decoration. We left these balloons up for almost 2 weeks, and only a few of them deflated. The only disadvantage is that after a few days, they lose their newly inflated shine for a matte, powdery look.

We used a small stool to reach our 9-foot high ceiling. You may need a step ladder for higher ceilings.

Flying the Balloons without Helium

From there, the process is simply placing the balloons on the ceiling in your desired pattern. We tried as much as possible to not have two same colors of balloons in close proximity.

But how did we get the ballons to float without helium?

We used our secret ingredient, balloon glue dots.  Take 1 - 2 dots of glue from off the strip and stick them to each balloon. Two more dots will keep heavier balloons secured to the ceiling.

Then reach up and stick your balloon to the ceiling, simple as that. This gives the illusion that your balloons are filled with helium and floated up to the ceiling.

A tip to ensure your balloons remain stuck to the ceiling is before making your arrangement, use a damp cloth to remove any dust particles that may prevent the adhesive on the glue dots from losing its stickiness. After ensuring that the surface is clean and dry, stick your balloons to the ceiling.

The glue dots work best on very smooth surfaces, rough surfaces may not offer enough surface area for effective sticking.

And Finally, we add our last balloon then viola. Behold the marvelous arrangement of floating balloons without helium in all its majestic glory.
